Mom pays $12K to hire cop at kid's school

A Florida woman is paying for a sheriff's deputy to patrol her daughter's elementary school.

There's taking the law into your own hands, and then there's this: A Florida mom concerned about school violence is simply paying for a sheriff's deputy to patrol her daughter's elementary school in Flagler Beach, Fla., according to HLN affiliate WKMG.

The price tag for the officer's 5-day-a-week, 6-hours-a-day service? Just about $12,000.

A spokesman for the Flagler County Sheriff's Office says Laura Lauria became fearful after the Sandy Hook tragedy and will be sending the $12,000 to her school district, which will reimburse the sheriff's office for the cost of stationing the deputy at Old Kings Elementary School in Flagler Beach.

The county has resource officers dedicated for high schools and at least three middle schools, but none for its elementary schools, according to WKMG.

Janet Valentine, the school district's superintendent, told the Daytona Beach News Journal that the woman had already paid for the officer to be at the school for two months and made a "verbal commitment" to pay for the officer for the rest of the year. "I don't know how you say no to such a wonderful gesture," she said.

Lauria happens to run a police supply company, and the sheriff's office says she's funding the deputy's patrol through her company.

What do you think of this mom's pricey protection plan? Over the top, smart or a little of both? Tell us in the comments.
