The widely praised rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner" Beyonce sung during President Barack Obama's inauguration Monday was a show-stopper for all the right reasons, except for one: She may have been lip-syncing.
According to numerous reports, Beyonce, who pulled out her earpiece mid-performance due to technical issues, was using a pre-recording of her own voice during the performance.
This has not been confirmed by the singer, however, and there are conflicting reports on the controversy. HLN has not received comment from Beyonce's camp as of this writing.
Other celebrities and singers have come out in supportof Beyonce, including LeAnn Rimes and Jennifer Lopez, who say that all singers lip-sync at some point in their careers.
Lopez, who appeared on "The Daily Show" Tuesday night, said, "In certain venues, they do pre-record things, because you're going to have that terrible slapback."
Rimes, who appeared on "Jimmy Kimmel Live," sympathized with Beyonce, saying that "There are times when people will ask you to do it, and they will not let you do it because they want to control what happens."
Aretha Franklin, who performed at Obama's first inauguration in 2009, tells ABC Newsthat she "cracked up" when she heard the news, but understands why Beyonce did it: "When I heard the news this evening that she was pre-recorded, I really laughed. I thought it was funny, because the weather down there was about 46 or 44 degrees and for most singers, that is just not good singing weather."
The controversy erupted Tuesday when Kristen DuBois, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Marine Band, said, "She [Beyonce] did not actually sing." DuBois added, "We don't know why the decision was made," but she did confirm that the star had "pre-recorded" the anthem the night before, shortly after rehearsing with the U.S. Marine Band.
Though this would be the first known case of the national anthem being lip-synced during an inauguration, DuBois stresses that pre-recordings are "not unusual" due to weather conditions or technical issues. "We all know Beyonce can sing, and the Marine Band can play," she said.
While Beyonce has not commented on the controversy, she did post a pictureto her Instagram account the day before the inauguration, which shows her in a recording studio with members of the Marine Corps Band.
