Did Arias try to create her own alibi?

NEED TO KNOW
  • Jodi Arias is accused of killing her ex-boyfriend, Travis Alexander, in Arizona
  • Arias says she killed Alexander in self-defense

Jodi Arias may have tried to create her own alibi for Travis Alexander’s murder with a voicemail left on his cell phone.

Homicide detective Lawrence Gladysh testified Tuesday in Arias’ trial that the voicemail was left on June 4, 2008, at 11:48 p.m., the same day Alexander was killed.

Prosecutor Juan Martinez played the voicemail for the jury.

On the recording, Arias seems to ramble, but she says she got lost, her phone died and she was sorry she hasn’t gotten back to him in a while. She also made reference to going to Crater Lake National Park with Alexander.

Gladysh said the cell phone records show Arias' call on June 4 was placed about 250 miles north of Alexander's home in Mesa, Arizona, where his body was found.

After Gladysh finished testifying, prosecutors called police Det. Esteban Flores back to the witness stand and played a video recording of Flores’ interrogating Arias July 15, 2008, where he confronts her with the photos recovered from Alexander’s camera.

On the video, Flores references the sexually explicit photos on the camera.

“I have seen all of you, and I have seen all of Travis,” said Flores.

Flores also shows Arias other photos that he says show the Alexander’s dead bleeding body and one that shows her foot at the crime scene. He also talks about how investigators found her bloody palm print on Alexander’s wall.

Arias continued to deny she killed Alexander, and at some point during the interrogation, she even begins to cry.

Martinez also played a video of Flores interrogating Arias the next day on July 16, 2008. This time, Arias is in an orange jumpsuit, because she is in jail.

Flores can be heard repeatedly in the video, asking Arias what happened the day Alexander died.

Flores said, "What went wrong? Did he say something to you? Did you get frustrated?"

Arias eventually told Flores that she witnessed two intruders kill Alexander. Arias also said that she didn't tell anyone because they threatened her family. Flores told Arias he didn't believe her new story.

Arias now says she killed Alexander in self-defense.
