Veteran character actor Charles Durning died at age 89 on Christmas Eve, according to his family.
Though his name may only faintly ring a bell, his face is likely familiar to most as he appeared in dozens of movies and television shows, including "Dog Day Afternoon," "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas," "Tootsie,""O Brother, Where Art Thou?" and "Evening Shade."
Durning's family, in a statement issued Tuesday, said, "Not only was Charlie a World War II hero but he was also a hero to his family. Charlie loved Christmas and if he could have chosen a time to pass, he would have chosen this day."
