Morgan Freeman: Newtown quote is a hoax

  • A statement allegedly from the actor about the Newtown shootings has been confirmed as a hoax
  • Freeman's rep: 'He neither wrote nor posted nor had any knowledge of it'
Morgan Freeman's rep says a statement attributed to the actor regarding the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting was a hoax.

The massacre that occurred in Newtown, Connecticut, on Friday struck a chord with people all over the world, including numerous celebrities. Many of them took to the Internet to express outrage and sadness over the senseless killings of 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

A statement attributed to Morgan Freeman went viral on social media blaming the media for sensationalizing the tragedy. But think twice before sharing it with your Facebook friends or Twitter followers because Freeman's rep confirms that he did not make that statement.

The actor has said through a representative that the falsely-attributed quote was a hoax.  “He neither wrote nor posted nor had any knowledge of it," Freeman's publicist tells HLN.

In part, the false statement read, "You want to know why. This may sound cynical, but here's why. It's because of the way the media reports it. Flip on the news and watch how we treat the Batman theater shooter and the Oregon mall shooter like celebrities. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris are household names, but do you know the name of a single victim of Columbine?"
