Sandy Hook principal: What we know about her

NEED TO KNOW
  • Dawn Hochsprung spent more than decade in school system
  • Hochsprung recently implemented new security program
School principal Dawn Hochsprung was among the 27 killed at Sandy Hook Elementary.

Just yesterday, Sandy Hook Elementary principal Dawn Hochsprung was tweeting photos of the school's winter concert rehearsal. She praised the fourth-grade singers as a "talented group."

Today, Hochsprung has been confirmed as one of the 27 killed at the Newtown, Connecticut school.

Though times seemed happy at the quiet town's school, Hochsprung was not without concerns about her students' safety. She had recently installed a new security system to help with student safety.

She initiated that every visitor after 9:30 a.m. would have to ring a doorbell at the school entrance to get in. Parents and visitors had to report to the main office, show their ID and sign in before they could get inside the school.

In a letter to "Members of our Sandy Hook Family," Hochsprung asked parents to be patient while they got the new system in place.

"Please understand that with nearly 700 students and over 1,000 parents representing 500 SHS families, most parents will be asked to show identification," she wrote.

According to a Newton Bee profile on Hochsprung, she came to Sandy Hook with 12 years of administrative experience. Before joining the school, she'd been a principal in another Connecticut district. At the time of the 2010 profile, she said she was raising two daughters and three stepdaughters.

In recent months, she's served as the school's "Book Fairy," visiting classrooms and handing out books. She was also heavily involved with "Project Eagle," a community service program.

In the Bee profile, Hochsprung said she was excited about her work at the school.

"I don't think you could find a more positive place to bring students to every day," Hochsprung told the newspaper.
