Mere hours after the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary, communities and concerned citizens are already organizing vigils and other opportunities for people to come together in honor of the victims of the Connecticut school shooting.
Twitter users are sending their thoughts and prayers into the online world using the hashtag #PrayForNewtown. Invitations for vigils across the country are also cropping up on Facebook, some as soon as this evening.
Vigils have been organized for several Connecticut communities this evening:
Branford: Branford's First Baptist Church and First Congregational Church are hosting a joint prayer service starting at 7 p.m. Friday
Hartford: Candlelight Vigil planned for 7 p.m. at Bushnell Park near the carousel
Granby: Vigil planned for 6 p.m. on Granby Town Green
New London: Vigil at Science & Technology Magnet High School at 7 p.m.
Rocky Hill: Town-wide prayer service being held at 7 p.m. at Rocky Hill Congregational Church for all who would like to gather in honor of the victims, families and community of Newtown
Trumbull: Nichols United Methodist Church on Shelton Road at 7:30 p.m.
