A Kansas City Chiefs player died Saturday from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at Arrowhead Stadium, police say.
The Kansas City Star, citing police, identified the player as 25-year-old Chiefs linebacker Javon Belcher.
Belcher took his life in a parking lot near Arrowhead Stadium as officers pulled up and saw him with a gun to his head talking with head coach Romeo Crennel and team general manager Scott Pioli, a police spokesman told reporters. The police spokesman said Belcher thanked Crennel and Pioli before fatally shooting himself.
Earlier on Saturday, police say Belcher shot and killed his girlfriend at her home. HLN affiliate KCTV has identified Belcher's girlfriend as 22-year-old Kasandra Perkins. Perkins and Belcher had a 3-month-old daughter together.
The team has released a statement, "We can confirm that there was an incident at Arrowhead earlier this morning. We are cooperating with authorities in their investigation."
Some Chiefs players took to Twitter to express their condolences and thoughts about the incident.
