This week’s Chick Fight features a N’awlins native who watches Saints games from deep inside enemy territory: the suburbs of Atlanta, Georgia. But not to worry, she built a "woman cave" decked out in black and gold as tribute to her hometown team. So how do you combat this Bayou beauty’s passion for all things fleur-de-lis? With a double dose of “Dirty Bird” pride, of course! That’s right, we’re talking twin Falcons fans!
Their teams face off Thursday night in a game that could solidify the Falcons as the team to beat in the NFC or keep the Saints' playoff hopes alive. Before we break down the matchup, lets meet these sassy Southern belles.
Team Saints: Brenda Parker (Mableton, Georgia)
Years as a fan: I went to a Saints game back in the late '60s when I was about 11 or 12 and my mom dressed me in a black and red plaid dress (ugh, Falcons colors…).
Craziest thing she’s done to support the team? Converted our family room into my “Saints woman cave.” I also wrote a pre-game speech before the Green Bay game this year and I’m pretty sure that we almost won because of that!
Weirdest superstitions? I have a certain Saints necklace that I have to wear on game days. Oh, and Saints-bashing during the game is a no-no!
Why she loves her team so much: I love their character and the fact that they exemplify the "team" concept. There are no prima donnas on the team. I love the way they represent the city and the Who Dat Nation. Of course, I also love Drew Brees :)
Team she hates the most: I wouldn't be a true fan if I didn't say "The Falcons"!!!
Score prediction: 34-20 Saints
Team Falcons: Margaret and Marshell Thornton (Atlanta, Georgia)
Years as a fan: Since elementary school.
Craziest things they’ve done to support the team? Margaret: Painted my face red and black and danced on stage in a pregame contest.
What are their superstitions? We never miss watching a game together, whether it’s on TV or at the Dome. We feel like it is bad luck if the other one isn’t watching. Also we have to have on Falcons gear.
Why they love the Falcons so much: Because we grew up watching with our dad. He was happy to have daughters that watched the sport and taught us everything! Plus, we’re from Atlanta so we have to love the home team!
Team they hate the most? The Saints.
Score prediction: 24-21 Falcons
Chicks in the Huddle’s Breakdown:
The key to the Atlanta Falcons’ successful start is that this team never gives up. They make big plays down the stretch and have made a habit out of last-second victories. But it is those last-second wins that have many skeptical that this team is the real deal. They just can’t seem to put anyone away early and dominate a game.
Don’t expect history to change against their division rivals, the New Orleans Saints. The Saints’ record may be 5-6 but these teams historically play each other pretty close. And you’d be a fool to sleep on Brees and that high-powered offense. The Saints have won four of the last five matchups between these two teams. And something tells this slightly biased chick that history will repeat itself.
Chicks in the Huddle’s prediction: Saints 28, Falcons 24
