He might not be shy when he’s singing about wanting to be your boyfriend, but Justin Bieber played it coy to even Oprah Winfrey when she questioned him about his relationship with Selena Gomez.
“Are you going to say the word girlfriend?” probed Winfrey. “My girlfriend yeah…” answered Bieber.
During the interview, which was pre-taped for “Oprah’s Next Chapter” at the end of October, Bieber opened up slightly about his relationship with the young 20-year-old Hollywood starlet, showing no signs of trouble in paradise weeks after their reported split.
“I am all about really genuine people,” Bieber said about why he wanted to be with Selena. “And I feel like she is one of the most genuine people, you know, she just has a good heart and I can talk to her about anything.”
Oprah’s interview was not edited to include the information of Bieber and Gomez’s split and then reconciliation. The couple was spotted showing PDA at an American Music Awards after-party looking very much like a couple still.
The 18-year-old Biebs also explained to Winfrey that he never wants to make Selena feel like he is ashamed of her, no matter the Twitter hate they received from some fans. “People are mean and people say mean things and, you know, but at the end of the day I still have to be happy, I can’t be single my whole life and I think the fans know that.”
Bieber continued, “I never make her separate from me because I don’t want her to ever feel like I’m ashamed of her. I feel like that a lot of guys do that, especially in the business, they don’t want to be seen with the girl so they’ll make them ride in separate cars and do all that getaway stuff. If we get away, we’re getting away together at least.”
So now that the young duo is on again, should we be looking out for wedding bells in the future? Bieber previously said that he wanted to be married by 25, something Oprah advised against.
“We’ll see when I get there, I mean I’m not there yet,” said Bieber when Winfrey asked if marriage was what he still wanted in the next 7 years. “Yeah, I mean you are Oprah and you’re telling me to not get married at 25, I should probably listen to you!”
