It’s a "sad day on Sesame Street," say officials from Sesame Workshop.
After a second person came forward Tuesday to accuse Kevin Clash, the voice and creator of Elmo, of having an inappropriate relationship with a minor, the puppeteer resigned.
Immediately following the news, many people on HLN Facebook’s page came to his defense.
“I don't think Mr. Clash should quit. I'd fight my accuser, and reclaim my good name. By quitting, the allegations appear to be more likely true. DON'T QUIT, KEVIN! FIGHT!!!” James O. wrote.
“I feel like this is going to be like the Michael Jackson case -- a billion people are going to come forward and say they had a relationship or they were raped just for the settlement money! None of the people making claims went to the police first -- either they went to PBS and Kevin Clash! He did unmentionable things to you but you still contact him?” Akira C. wrote.
Others had a strong reaction to disassociate with the Sesame Street puppet.
“Ewww! I want my money back on all Elmo products!” Evelyn W. wrote.
“All I can think of is how creepy the tickle me Elmo doll is now. Sad,” Lilly A. commented.
But is it fair to punish Elmo for Clash’s actions? Some say no.
“No fault to ELMO... we all know we can't pick our parents our in his case our PUPPETEER!!!” Cyndi C. commented.
