"Recipes from the Heart" is all about that special dish that you want to make time and time again. Every week, a food blogger or food professional will share a recipe, and a little bit about why it's so important to them.
Jana Erwin is the creator of Cherry Tea Cakes, a food and lifestyle blog with a "cherry-tea-ble" purpose. Her red, white and blue candy bars show off her patriotic spirit and political background.
The Fourth of July is my favorite holiday. It isn't hard to guess why. I know that I live a blessed life. I have a home to live in, a job that pays my bills, food to eat, and the love and support of a wonderful family, gracious friends and the best fiance I could ask for. My happy and full life was the goal of my great-grandparents who immigrated to the United States. I owe my piece of the American dream to them, and to the country that welcomed them.
For five years, I've worked at a DC Think Tank, doing my bit in politics and trying to contribute to the country I love. I believe that where much is given, much is required. In 2009, I decided to do more and I started my blog, Cherry Tea Cakes. Cherry Tea is my "foodie-ism" for charity. I enjoyed the idea of creating a blog where the wonderful foods I make can help raise money for those in my community who have none. The proceeds I have made from the blog is donated to my local food banks, and in my own way, I've become a Robin Hood of food. I hope that the good I do can help those in need and give them the strength to pursue their own dreams.
I am part of the country that understands what it means to do more. Some of us do more by running for office, others by volunteering in schools, donating to charity, serving in the armed forces or voting on Election Day. We each contribute to this great nation in our own way, and today I'm happy I could share mine with you.
