The FBI is searching a wooded area near Shorewood, Illinois, for Drew Peterson’s fourth wife, according to HLN affiliate WLS.
Stacy Peterson's cellphone showed activity in that area before she disappeared in October 2007. She has never been found.
In Session correspondent Jean Casarez confirmed that FBI investigators are working with the Illinois State Police and local authorities. FBI investigators began searching near Shorewood Monday night and will continue their efforts Tuesday.
They’ve set up a mobile command center near a forestry preserve where investigators are searching.
The FBI says the search is related to an ongoing investigation, but will not say whether the search is for Peterson. The FBI also says if investigators find something to report from this search, it will be made public.
In September, a jury found Peterson guilty of first-degree murder for killing his third wife, Kathleen Savio.
Savio was found dead in 2004. Investigators first ruled her death an accident, but the case was reopened in 2007 when Peterson’s fourth wife, Stacy Peterson, went missing and investigators exhumed and re-examined Savio’s body and said her death was a homicide.
Drew Peterson is not facing any charges related to Stacy Peterson’s disappearance.
