Domestic violence: Men can be victims, too

Domestic violence can be physical, sexual or emotional abuse. When the abuse is between two individuals in a romantic relationship, the abuse can also be referred to as intimate partner violence. The effects of IPV or domestic violence can cause lasting effects on the victim. Many male victims silently struggle with their abuse because they fear they may be ridiculed or embarrassed. Others are afraid that no one will believe them.

It is important to note that women are at a much greater risk of falling victim to domestic violence and intimate partner violence than men.  More than 1.5 million women are victims of intimate partner violence every year. However, domestic violence knows no gender, age or skin color—leaving men and children victims, too.

If you need help, call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1−800−799−SAFE (7233).
