Nicole Kidman, the statuesque redhead who graces Harper's Bazaar's upcoming November issue cover, is opening up about Tom Cruise, her sexuality, and how red carpet anxiety can rattle even a veteran like her.
While Kidman kept mum about Cruise's recent divorce from Katie Holmes, she did open up about her marriage to the superstar, which ended in 2001. “In those early years, it was like, ‘I’m here and I’m clutching onto your arm, and it all feels a little overwhelming and really strange,” she reveals.
“And I was shy. Deeply shy. I didn’t feel comfortable at all. But I felt very comfortable at home.”
One place where she didn't feel as comfortable was the red carpet, but the actress says she's gained perspective on that as well. “All of that other stuff becomes less important. Like, I’ve always had a little belly. I mean, now that I’m 45, they don’t say, ‘Oh, she’s pregnant!’ as much. But I’ve got skinny arms and legs, and then I’ve got a little belly.”
One person who has helped her feel comfortable in her own skin is current husband, country star Keith Urban. Kidman explains that while she has nothing negative to say about Cruise, Urban is “more like an ocean; he took me out.”
She explains that he has “a bigger, stronger personality; that’s what I’ve been drawn to. I need protection. Everyone wants to feel someone’s got their back.”
Urban, who is currently one of the four judges on this season's "American Idol," also helped rejuvenate her in every way possible: “He just gave me confidence through just being very kind to me and understanding me, opening me up to trying things, my sexuality, those sorts of things.”
