Ann Romney targeted moms at the GOP convention Tuesday night and mothers across the nation were definitely listening.
“It's the moms who always have to work a little harder to make everything right,” Ann said in her convention speech. “It's the moms of this nation -- single, married, widowed -- who really hold this country together.”
Moms we talked to after Ann’s speech said she managed to humanize Mitt and give him the emotional connection with women voters that he has so far struggled to achieve. They were also thrilled by Ann’s assertion that moms’ jobs are often, at least, a little bit harder than the jobs of their partners. That’s a fact, the moms said, that many non-moms don’t seem to believe or acknowledge.
And they particularly loved Ann’s shout-out to single moms, which was certainly a strategic move by the Romney campaign. Single moms are one of the fastest-growing voter blocs in the nation and a significant number of those moms are independent, undecided voters who could help determine the outcome of the upcoming election.
We posted Ann’s convention message to moms on the CafeMom’s Moms Matter Facebook page last night and within minutes, hundreds of moms had responded. Many of them wholeheartedly believed Ann Romney’s assurances that she knows what it’s like for moms who are struggling to make ends meet.
“Her speech brought tears to my eyes,” wrote Chrissy R.
“Ann hit a home run,” wrote Maryellen C. “What a woman.”
“Ann Romney is class and character,” added Holly R. “I was very impressed with her speech and the pride she let show.”
Others, though, weren’t buying it.
“She has no idea of the struggles of American mothers,” wrote Jennifer N.
“My family has been greatly affected by the recession,” wrote Erica W., adding: “I hear nothing from the great Mitt Romney that is going to help us all, especially us MOMS!!!!”
“She has NO clue what being a single mother in this country is like,” Renee D. added, “Nor does she know one damn thing about struggle.”
Ultimately, Ann Romney has opened the floodgates of debate among moms today as they continue to discuss her speech, her husband Mitt, and the Republican Party platform on CafeMom.com.
