Is TLC’s newest show, “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” a sign of the apocalypse? Some critics seem to think so!
The reality show, which premiered Wednesday night, follows outrageous “Toddlers and Tiaras” star Alana Thompson, aka Honey Boo Boo Child, and her self-described “redneck” family as they make the beauty pageant circuit and live their lives in rural Georgia.
Critics are taking issue with the show, calling it “trash,” with the Boston Herald even saying TLC has “hit a new low” with the program. Buddy TV called the show a “sign of the apocalypse,” and Zap 2 It pulled no punches in describing it as “everything wrong with America.”
The premiere episode featured plenty of tears as Alana lost in a pageant, but just as many laughs as we were introduced to her family, including two sisters, (one of whom Alana calls “the pregnanciest,”) her extreme-coupon-queen mother June, and her exasperated but loving father.
The episode follows the family as they go to the "Redneck Games," where they bob for pigs feet and get “redneck facials,” which include scooping up mud and splattering it over their faces.
“Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” is not the kind of program that hinges on good reviews. Audiences will watch in droves, maybe because of how terrible it is. As Honey Boo Boo would say to the critics, “You better redneckognize!”
