College students, beware. A new study suggests there’s a link between risky sex and the consumption of caffeinated energy drinks mixed with alcoholic beverages.
The research, conducted by the University at Buffalo’s Research Institute on Addictions (RIA), found that co-eds who consumed energy drinks such as Four Loko or Red Bull and mixed them with alcohol, were more likely to report they were intoxicated during their last sexual encounter.
Previous studies have linked energy drink consumption with other unsafe behaviors like driving under the influence and binge drinking.
“Drinking energy drinks in general and alcohol and energy drinks combined is associated with a whole lot of risky behavior … This doesn't mean [drinking these types of drinks] is casual, but it's a really good indicator,” senior research scientist Kathleen E. Miller told the Huffington Post.
Now that we have the important results of this study, what’s the next step?
Miller says, “Ideally, I'd like to see a public education campaign come out of this. Knowledge is power. Energy drinks have been here for a while, but we still know every little about them. Every Red Bull should have a large label that says, 'Don't mix this with alcohol, stupid!’”
The study was funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse and involved 648 participants between the ages of 18 and 40.
