Actor Sherman Hemsley passed away at his home in El Paso, Texas, on Tuesday at the age of 74.
His booking agent confirmed the death to HLN Tuesday evening.
Hemsley was best known for his role as George Jefferson in the 1970’s sitcom “All in the Family” and the show’s spinoff “The Jeffersons.”
Norman Lear, who created those shows, said, "“With the passing of Sherman Hensley, the world loses one of its most unique comedic talents, and a lovely man.”
Jefferson also played Deacon Ernest Frye in the sitcom "Amen."
Actor Clifton Davis, who worked with him on that show, told CNN, "“The world has lost a great comedic actor who was very, very shy off-camera, and came alive when the red light went on... He will be surely missed. Both my thoughts and prayers are with him. We’re going to miss him. He’s gone all too soon."
The exact cause of death is pending autopsy results, but no foul play is suspected.
