Brooklyn neighbors ready to fight Hooters

Brooklyn is gaining a new basketball team this fall and with a new basketball team comes a new arena. And with a new arena comes beer and wings. And who better to serve beer and wings? You see where we’re going with this...

According to the New York Daily News, Hooters has been trying to open up shop near the Barclays Center arena. But right next door is the highly desirable, historic brownstone neighborhood of Park Slope. And you can bet the parents there aren’t too happy with their potential new neighbor.

“It’s a disgusting national chain with bad beer and bad food,” mother of two, Lee Skaife, tells the New York Daily News.

Phoebe McGraw has lived in Park Slope for four decades. “From here they’ll go to strip joints,” she tells the Daily News. “It’s heartbreaking. They’re destroying something special.”

There’s a “Save Park Slope” group that has taken to Twitter with some harsh words and a pretty fierce promise: “We will fight Hooters on all fronts,” they tweeted.

A spokesperson for Hooters sent HLN the following statement: “Businesses and communities will attest that Hooters is a great neighbor and proud supporter of the communities we serve. Hooters is actively seeking new locations around the world, and we have numerous restaurants in the metro area that are successful and integrated into the fabric of the community.”

Park Slope moms may end up having nothing to worry about afterall. The North Flatbush Business Improvement District is calling this a “non-issue,” tweeting that no Hooters will be coming to the area.

“Can we get back to more important issues!” they said on their Twitter page.

The executive director of the North Flatbush BID also tells the New York Daily News that Hooters was rejected twice by business owners who wouldn’t rent to them.

So could it be much ado about nothing? Maybe so. But we’re curious what you would do if a Hooters were looking to move into your neighborhood: Shrug your shoulders or fight back?
