Every morning on Morning Express with Robin Meade, we salute the men & women who serve in the armed forces... and every now and then we salute their K-9 counterparts, too. Some of the most memorable salutes we've featured on HLN involve military working dogs like Ivy and Nugget, who came and visited us on set last year. We're very happy to report that they were both quickly adopted. If you're interested in adopting your own Ivy or Nugget visit the Baghdad Pups section of the the SPCA International's website.
Then there was Bino, who was such a good boy while his human Debbie told us about her organization, Military Working Dog Adoptions and the Hero Dog Awards! We were very exited to learn that Bino WON the award for dogs in the military category! Voting is now open for this year's awards.
Sadly, not every dog comes home from a military job has happy and healthy as Ivy, Nugget and Bino. There are some who have been diagnosed with PTSD. Robin told us about this trend late last year. She also told us about a group working to honor and find families for these special pups -- the US War Dogs Association. They not only look out for the animals, but the humans who rely on them too.
Finally, there's this YouTube video, the inspiration for this virtual trip to the military dog park. According to the Welcome Home Blog, German Shepherd Ranger thought he was just out for a game of fetch with his favorite toy. Little did he know that when he brought his "green monster" back for another throw, his owner, home from deployment, would be waiting to surprise him. You've probably heard a dog crying out of sadness or anxiety -- and of course we can't know for sure what was going on in Ranger's head -- but if ever a dog cried out of sheer joy, this is the sound he would make:
If you have a special military reunion moment, whether it involves a pet or not, we'd love to feature it on Morning Express with Robin Meade. Upload your video on our "Salute to Troops Assignment Page" on iReport.com. We may use it on the air!
