Judge Rules Casey Anthony Defamation Case Can Go To Trial

Judge Lisa Munyon ruled that the defamation suit against Casey Anthony can proceed to trial because there are issues that must be decided by a jury. Munyon denied Zenaida Gonzalez's request for summary judgment.

The judge partially granted Casey Anthony’s motion to dismiss the lawsuit as it pertains to her statements to police July 16, 2008, in which Anthony denied Gonzalez was not the “nanny” when shown a photograph, but denied the motion as to Anthony’s statements made to her parents on July 25, 2008 during a recorded jail visitation.

The judge also ruled that the jury should decide Gonzalez’s attorney’s claim that Casey Anthony’s mother was acting as her “agent” by publicizing the undisputed statement despite allegedly knowing it was false.

Casey Anthony’s defamation trial is scheduled to begin Jan. 2, 2013.
