'The Flintstones' are coming back!

  • Fox has picked up a 'Flintstones' reboot
  • 'Family Guy' creator Seth MacFarlane will be at the helm
'The Flintstones' are coming back!

Cartoon lovers, rejoice! Fox is re-booting everyone's childhood by bringing back "The Flintstones" -- and "Family Guy" man Seth MacFarlane is going to write it into life.

The cartoon-creating mogul revealed his plans at South by Southwest last week, and said the show is in the "early stages," which is understandable since it's not slated to grace Fox's schedule until 2013

"I'm finishing a rewrite on the pilot," MacFarlane said during a talk on Sunday. "We're trying to, essentially, stay true to what that show is. There's something cool to me about, in 2013, turning on your TV and seeing 'The Flintstones' and having it look like 'The Flintstones'."

MacFarlane pointed out Hanna-Barbera shows like "The Flintstones" pioneered modern animation aesthetics, and his talk of keeping tight to the original "Flintstones" concept undoubtedly has fans buzzing with nostalgic excitement.

Some think, however, that the mind behind notoriously edgy shows like "Family Guy" and "American Dad" won't be able to pull off the show's original expression without disappointing new fans. Conversely, he may risk ruining a classic by trying to add a modern edge.

For those in doubt, perhaps a tour through old "Flintstones" episodes will recall a surprisingly witty and sometimes dark sense of humor, like a reference to "Charles Mansonstone" in an old Christmas episode

MacFarlane assures fans the new show will steer clear of the content that has made his other projects so infamous. "It's a balance," he said. "We're kind of shooting for the level of edge in mid-90's 'Simpsons'. You're not going to see abortion jokes."

A relief for some, but do you think MacFarlane's new "Flintstones" gamble is a yabba-dabba-do, or a yabba-dabba-don't?
