'If it was just me and his grandmother it would have been over,' Ernest Monhollen tells HLN affiliate WDIV.

A Michigan man who was trapped underneath a car says he owes his life to his 15-year-old grandson.

The pair was working on a 1991 Buick, which was propped up on cinder blocks.

"I was inside … pumping the breaks … and I felt it rock just slightly," Austin Smith tells HLN affiliate WDIV.

A few moments later, the teen got out of the car, and that’s when he says it collapsed, crushing his 74-year-old grandfather.

Energized by a burst of adrenaline, Austin was able to lift the front end of the 2000-pound vehicle just enough so his grandfather could squeeze out from under it.

"Thank God he was here because if it was just me and his grandmother it would have been over. That would have been it," Ernest Monhollen tells WDIV.

“Papa Ernie” has a pretty serious cut on his face and he fractured his ribs and an eye socket, according to WDIV.

Austin says the experience has brought the two even closer together than they were before; grandpa says he couldn’t be prouder.

"He's a wonderful young man. That's all I can say.”
