Dexter loves watching the panting Labrador on DOGTV

Luda's show of choice: 'Dancing with the Stars'
Pretty soon, your pooch may be demanding the remote and changing the channel from “Downton Abby” to a new TV network called DOGTV. It’s a channel that's been designed with canines in mind.
We see visions of fire hydrants and tennis balls in our heads. (Maybe a little butt-sniffing, too? No? Is that gross?).
HLN affiliate KSWB reports that a creative team spent hundreds of hours over four years coming up with the scenery, color palettes, camera angles and transitions they use. It may look like crap to you, but apparently it looks great to canines.
Some examples of what you’ll see: dogs chasing balls on the beach, jumping into swimming pools or rolling around in the park. My absolute favorite clip is intended for “relaxation” and I’m pretty convinced it works on humans, too.
After watching this 56-second montage of sleeping pups, I was ready to take a nap!
You might be wondering, “Hey, won’t this just make my dog kinda ticked off that he’s stuck inside while all these dogs get to do fun stuff outside?” Well I decided to put it to the test in my house, turning on one of the sample clips and plopping my pooches down in front of it.
Kylie sat obediently in front of the TV and acted like she couldn’t see a dang thing, giving me the look that screams, “Time to play with soccer balls now?!” (she does love soccer balls).
Dexter is the kind of dog that stops in his tracks any time a dog toy commercial comes on so I knew this would be right up his alley. He wasn’t as excited as I thought he’d be, but I could see him start to get that glazed-over look as he watched a Labrador panting in the back of a pick-up truck.
Then, as soon as the clip was over, he was off the couch and grabbing his tug-o-war rope toy and dropping it at my feet. So clearly using TV as a doggie babysitter isn’t going to quench his seemingly incessant desires for one-on-one time with a human (darn!).
Of course this was just their observed behavior. What they do when we’re out of the house … well that might be another story. I can just see them ordering a few pizzas and kicking up their paws on the coffee table while watching a Golden Retriever being told what a “good boy” he is over and over again.
DOGTV is gearing up for its national launch and is currently available in San Diego on COX channel 2635 and Time Warner channel 148. Contact your cable provider to find out exactly when it hits your market and expect to pay about $4.99/month.
