On your mark, get set, propose! For all of you romantics out there that used Valentine’s Day to pop the question, chances are Matt Grevers already blew your creative gesture out of the water.
Grevers, a three-time Olympic gold medalist and his girlfriend, fellow USA National Swimming teammate Annie Chandler, have long been viewed as swimming's royal couple. So during last Saturday’s Missouri Grand Prix meet, Grevers came up with a plan to surprise his girlfriend of three years with an elaborate proposal. All he had to do was win his race. Did we mention he's an Olympic gold medalist?
So after winning first place in the 100-meter backstroke, he used his moment on the podium for an even bigger moment. With the help of swim meet organizers and his brother, Missouri assistant swim coach Andy Grevers, they set it up so Annie would be the one handing out the medals. Soon after giving Matt his medal and a quick kiss, he pulled her back up on the podium for a “picture.” He then gave her the surprise of a lifetime when he dropped to one knee.
The rest is viral video gold! Nice job, Matt. For the rest of you romantics, you've got your work cut out for you if you want to top that one.
