Did you know that Valentine’s Day is not the only holiday celebrated on February 14? National Condom Day also falls on the day of love. And in honor of the latter, the New York City Health Department is updating a mobile app that helps you find free condoms.
It’s called the NYC Condom Finder app and the condoms really are free. According to the Health Department’s press release, there are almost 1,000 venues throughout the five boroughs that supply you with the freebies. And the app does all the work for you -- download it, let it ID your location using GPS technology (or put in your address manually), and the app finds the five closest locations to you that have free condoms. It will even give you walking/driving/public transit directions.
The app itself is also free and available on Apple and Android markets, as well as Windows BlackBerry phones starting this year.
“The need is there,” Health Department official Dr. Monica Sweeney told HLN affiliate WCBS. “We continue to have new HIV, especially with men who have sex with men and unplanned, unwanted pregnancies and other STDs. As long as we do, we need to do more.”
Another reason the Health Department is extending the app? It was downloaded more than 25,000 times since its launch in 2011, according to the affiliate.
The app is part of NYC’s effort to encourage safe sex, on Valentine’s Day and the rest of the year. And the condom you get isn’t just any condom: It’s New York’s very own city branded condom (the nation’s first).
“New Yorkers are mobile, so we need to reach them both with sexual health information and easy access to service information wherever they are,” said New York City Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Farley.
Would you use the app if you find yourself wandering the streets of NYC?
