New love? Broken heart? Facebook has your playlist

NEED TO KNOW
  • Facebook names songs most listened to when falling in or out of love
  • Users in new relationships listen to Jason Derulo, Beyonce
  • Kanye, Drake popular among the heartbroken

This Valentine's Day, Facebook has determined the songs you're most likely to listen to if you're feeling the ecstatic elation of a hot-burning new romance ... and the ones you're probably listening to while sitting up in bed with only a rapidly-emptying box of cookies and your raging heartache to keep you company.

Also: Facebook knows way too much about us.

The Facebook Data Team posted on their blog that they figured all this out by looking "at the songs most played by people in the U.S. on Spotify as they make their relationships and breakups "Facebook official".

It's a little bit too vague on the methodology for my taste, but it sounds something like: When you update your Facebook relationship status, they're checking what songs you're listening to at the same time on Spotify, which many users sync to their Facebook accounts.

And it turns out that Jason Derulo strikes just the right notes when we're celebrating a new relationship -- and there's nothing like Drake or Mumford & Sons to provide the soundtrack for the painful process of changing your status to 'Single.'

The only artist to show up on both lists? Bruno Mars, which is fitting since Mars is the Roman god of war.

And as Pat Benatar reminded us, love is a battlefield.

Here are both lists from Facebook:
