Top recruit picks college based on Chick-fil-A?

NEED TO KNOW
  • Four-star linebacker recruit chose Auburn over Clemson
  • Jokingly, he said, 'They had no Chick-fil-A on campus!'
  • Now, he's listing the real reasons for signing with Auburn

Things we love about the South: The hospitality, the warm weather, the food ... especially the food. And we’re not the only ones.

Even on National Signing Day, a southern delicacy seems to have played a part in Cassanova McKinzy's college pick. According to HLN affiliate WYFF, the linebacker, originally recruited by Clemson University, chose to sign with Auburn University instead because of … Chick-fil-A?

"They had no Chick-fil-A on campus," McKinzy told the affiliate about Clemson. "You had to go 15 minutes off campus to go to a real restaurant.”

The following day, the top recruit was eating his words. AlabamaLive.com reports McKinzy said his statement was taken out of context.

"That's not the reason I chose Auburn or why I didn't choose Clemson," McKinzy said Thursday. "I was just being funny. I gave all the reasons why I chose Auburn."

He cited having developed a relationship with the coaches and players, having played with Auburn cornerback Chris Davis, and having always been a War Eagle fan as some of those reasons. "Clemson is a great place. I didn't mean it like that,” McKinzy told AlabamaLive.com. “I couldn't picture myself there.”

Turns out, McKinzy was wrong about Clemson’s lack of restaurants on campus: WYFF found a Chick-fil-A in the school's canteen.
