Squatters have yard sale with soldier's stuff

NEED TO KNOW
  • Sam Burbank had just returned from Iraq and was stationed at Ft. Hood with his wife
  • Police say two squatters moved into their home and started selling their belongings

What a terrible homecoming for 47-year-old Sam Burbank. While the Iraq war veteran was returning from serving overseas, police say squatters were moving into his Houston home.

"They literally went to one of the back bedrooms, got a mattress, made up a bed and set up house," Captain Rex Evans told KPRC.

Investigators say the two parolees who moved in also decided to have a yard sale with the soldier’s belongings. That’s what tipped off neighbors, who started to notice the family’s belongings being dragged out onto the lawn -- everything from furniture to family photos.

When police searched the house, they say they found several bags of meth, needles and spoons used to cook the drug.

“This is certainly at the top of my list of deplorable criminal activity,” says Evans.

Firefighters worked through the rain to help return some of the Burbanks’ belongings to their home.

The couple will now have to rush home from Fort Hood to figure out what was taken before they can file burglary charges.
