Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer announced Tuesday a nationwide recall of 28 lots of two kinds of birth control pills because of a 'packaging error' that could result in inaccurate doses and risk of pregnancy.
The tablets, 14 lots of Lo/Ovral-28 and 14 lots of Norgestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol, also may be out of sequence, the company said.
“As a result of this packaging error, the daily regimen for these oral contraceptives may be incorrect and could leave women without adequate contraception, and at risk for unintended pregnancy,” Pfizer said in a statement on its website.
“These packaging defects do not pose any immediate health risks. However, consumers exposed to affected packaging should begin using a non-hormonal form of contraception immediately. Patients who have the affected product should notify their physician and return the product to the pharmacy,” the company said.
The affected lot numbers, along with their respective dates, are listed on the company’s website.
About one million of the blister packs, which are marketed under the Akrimax Rx Products brand, are involved in the recall.
The company said the cause of the error was “identified and corrected immediately.”
