Police responded to a call about a shooting at a home in the 12000 block of Mulholland Drive at 4 a.m. Wednesday, Los Angeles Police Department Officer Tenesha Dodine said.
Police transported Cornelius to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead of a gunshot wound. The LA Coroner's office confirmed the LAPD reported to them that the gunshot would was "self-inflicted."
Cornelius was known for offering more exposure to black musicians through his revolutionary programming, and for his signature catch phrases.
Music and recording great Quincy Jones released a statement upon news of Cornelius' death:
"I am shocked and deeply saddened at the sudden passing of my friend, colleague and business partner Don Cornelius. Don was a visionary pioneer and a giant in our business. Before MTV there was Soul Train, that will be the great legacy of Don Cornelius...my heart goes out to Don's family and loved ones."
In the spirit of Don's smooth sendoffs we wish him love, peace and soul:
