Remember when New Yorkers could take photos of subway rats and rate them online? Bostonians can now take photos of their fellow human subway riders -- and rate them online.
Yep, a new site lets you swoon over the photo of your “T Crush” -- a cute guy you saw while riding on the Boston subway (aka, the T). HLN affiliate WCVB reports that the website lets users submit photos of male MBTA riders they consider attractive. It also lets site visitors rate said hotties.
On their blog, the site operators explain that, for now, they will only accept photos of men because they want to avoid criminals targeting women. “We are aware of the terrible impact that street harassment has had on our society … [and that it is] predominantly (not exclusively) upon women,” reads the statement on the front page. Apparently, the ladies are just fine with being left out of subway judgment.
"I wouldn't like that," one female rider told the news station. "I think it would be embarrassing."
"It's a little tacky, don't you think?” said another woman.
But the guys don’t seem to mind the attention and the flattery that (hopefully) comes with it.
"I don't feel objectified, no. That's fine," said a male commuter.
Not surprisingly, MBTA officials are concerned with the passengers’ privacy, but they told WCVB there’s nothing they can do to shut the site down.
The idea is not new. BostonTCrush.com is the youngest brother of London’s tubecrush.net and New York’s subwaycrush.net. There’s also Missed Connections on Craigslist and WeMetOnAPlane.com, which lets you reconnect with someone whose number you didn't have a chance to get in flight.
What do you think: Are sites like this great for making connections or plain creepy?
