Surviving Costa Concordia passengers will be offered $14,400 each to ease their suffering.
The enormous cruise ship hit rocks off the Tuscan coast of Italy on January 13. The collision caused the boat to roll over onto its side in shallow waters, resulting in a frantic evacuation and multiple deaths.
A statement from The Italian Association of Tour Operators says the compensation will be paid to each passenger regardless of age to cover damage to and loss of property. The compensation is also supposed to help with the treatment of suffering caused by psychological distress.
The association says compensation will also include reimbursement for the cost of the cruise and additional travel expenses. In addition, Costa will provide a psychological counseling program for those passengers who need it.
Separate compensation agreements will be reached with injured passengers who needed treatment at the scene and with the families of those who died, the statement added.
The decision to offer a compensation package was reached during a meeting between Costa Cruises and consumer groups, the association said.
Divers found a 16th body while searching the vessel Tuesday, but 16 others are still missing from among the roughly 4,200 people aboard the cruise liner. There were around 3,200 passengers and 1,000 crew members at the time of the collision.
