Son of NYC police commissioner accused of rape

NEED TO KNOW
  • 'Good Day New York' anchor Greg Kelly is accused of rape
  • Kelly is the son of New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly

A woman says she was allegedly raped by a New York news anchorman, who just happens to be the son of the city police commissioner.

Greg Kelly, host of Fox affiliate WNYW’s “Good Day New York," is accused of raping a woman October 8 in a Lower Manhattan office. The case has been handed over to the Manhattan District Attorney’s office due to conflict of interest. Kelly, 43, is the son of New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly.

District Attorney Cyrus Vance’s office says they will neither confirm nor deny an investigation in the case. However, Kelly’s attorney released a statement in response to how the case is currently being handled.

“Mr. Kelly is aware that the New York County District Attorney’s office is conducting an investigation,” says attorney Andrew Lankler.  “Mr. Kelly strenuously denies any wrongdoing of any kind, and is cooperating fully with the district attorney’s investigation. We know the district attorney’s investigation will prove Mr. Kelly’s innocence.”

While the incident allegedly occurred on October 8 of last year, the accuser did not file a report with police until this past Tuesday, according to the New York Times. The accuser reportedly claims she and Kelly had drinks at South Street Seaport three months ago and then went to her law firm offices, where she says the alleged rape occurred.

Sources tell the New York Times the accuser’s boyfriend later approached NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly at a public event, claiming “your son’s ruining my girlfriend’s life.” Ray Kelly reportedly responded by telling the man to “write a letter” but it is unclear if he ever did so.

“Everyone has a right to have their complaints investigated,” Mayor Michael Bloomberg tells CNN. “As far as I know, Greg Kelly has not been charged with anything … so I don’t know how that is going to turn out.”

If the allegations prove to be false, Greg Kelly would not be the first high-profile man accused of rape. NBA star Kobe Bryant was accused of rape in 2003. His accuser refused to go to trial and the case was dismissed in September of 2004. And star NFL quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was accused of sexually assaulting a 20 year-old woman in Georgia in 2010, but never faced charges in that case.

Mike Paul, otherwise known as “The Reputation Doctor," tells HLN’s Vinnie Politan that Kelly’s reputation would survive because the truth will salvage it, as it did in the cases of Bryant and Roethlisberger.

“Your reputation is in the land of truth and in the land of trust,” Paul says. “We want to know the whole truth and nothing but the truth just like in the court of law, but we’re dealing with the court of public opinion.”

Kelly did not anchor the Thursday edition of his morning show, but the program did report on the allegations. WNYW has declined additional comment.
