You may spend too much of your life on Facebook, but your death doesn’t need to stop that.
Want to let your Facebook friends know what you really thought of them? Want to cheer on your team from the afterlife (Go Packers … next year!). Want to tell that joke that made everyone laugh one more time? Now you can with the “If I Die” app.
The app allows you to put in one or more final messages, videos or other posts that will appear on Facebook after your death. The app can be set up to post everything at once, or creepily, spaced out over a period of time.
How does it know you’re dead? It asks you to designate at least three of your friends as “trustees." When they confirm your passing, the system will begin posting your words from beyond. Also, to stop an April 1 prank where your friends “kill” you on Facebook, the makers say they will send you an email after the first report of your death. They also suggest not telling your each of your “trustees” who the others are.
The Facebook fan page for the app has about 7,500 followers so far. The makers told Denver TV station KDVR that none of their users have actually died yet, so it has not been used for real. A Miami-based blogger did “fake” her own death to test it out. She was a little underwhelmed by the result.
So if you’re feeling a bit fatalistic, or just really like to be prepared, you can make sure the Grim Reaper does not have the final word.
