In a few months, Greensboro, North Carolina, is gonna be rolling in the money. Their own money, that is.
The city has decided to start using its own specific currency in an effort to boost the local economy. Local banks and shops backed the idea, and the paper money will go into effect in the spring (it is illegal to make coin versions). Organizers hope, with any luck, they can get about 50 local business on board with the project.
The whole idea is to support the local economy by keeping the bucks in town. "The local money has to stay here," said Signe Waller Foxworth, who came up with the idea three years ago. "There's no other place for it to go, so it really will stimulate local commerce."
Organizers are also asking the community for suggestions about what the currency should be named. (Greensboro Green? 'Boro Bucks?)
Oddly enough, Greensboro is far from the only city that has explored a local form of cash. Large cities like Seattle, Philadelphia and Washington D.C. all have variations as well.
