Just as awards season gets into full swing, Sean Penn was able to bring some of the biggest names in Hollywood together for a good cause.
Penn’s J/P Haitian Relief Organization hosted a star studded fundraiser in Beverly Hills and was able to raise an impressive $5 million. Penn set up shop just months after the devastating earthquake occurred in 2010. Penn tells HLN’s Showbiz Tonight his involvement in the cause was a complete “accident.”
“It’s not a surprising accident, they’re next door. Some of these things are just timing,” says Penn. “The work that has been done, while slow and frustrating in many cases it is a miraculous amount of work that has been done in the last two years.”
Penn is not alone in this cause. He has a bevy of celebrity friends like George Clooney, Julia Roberts and Leonardo DiCaprio lending their support. In a rare red carpet appearance, Mel Gibson tells HLN he knows how important it is for stars to shine a light on the cause. “I think it’s important to be part of supporting,” says Gibson. “I applaud Sean’s efforts to make this public. This is good because it’s kind of forgotten about in a way.
Kim Kardashian was also on hand at the event to show her support and talk about her recent trip to Haiti. “When I got down there I felt like there is so much that needs to be done, I don’t know where to start,” says Kim. “I just think that everyone can help in any way, whether it is online or do anything.”
