The family of embattled former Penn State athletic director Tim Curley reveals that he was treated for lung cancer in 2010, the Patriot-News reported Wednesday.
His wife said that doctors are monitoring Curley’s health after he had part of one lung removed in 2010, the Patriot-News said. “During this difficult time, Tim did not want his health to be a distraction and has been dealing with this privately,” his wife Melinda Curley said in a statement to The Patriot-News.
Quoting a source close to the family, the paper said Curley did not want it to look like he was trying to garner sympathy as his trial approached.

Curley’s illness is the second disclosure of lung cancer by a major figure associated with the Penn State scandal.
In November, former Penn State head coach Joe Paterno, 85, was diagnosed with a treatable form of lung cancer in November. The announcement came just days after a grand jury report alleged that former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky had sexually abused several boys spanning 15 years, beginning in 1994.

Both Curley and Gary Schultz, the former vice president who has since stepped down, face perjury charges based on evidence that they lied to a grand jury and didn't stop the abuse.
Curley remains on administrative leave. His attorney said his client is focused on proving that he's innocent, Sports Illustrated reported Thursday.
