It’s a sad, sad day in Cougartown

  • Older women embraced the Ashton-Demi union, only to be let down
  • Author and columnist Sarah Ivens has the postmortem, exclusive to

Editors Note: Sarah Ivens is the former Editor-In-Chief of OK! Magazine, who published the exclusive photos of Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher's wedding in 2005. Ivens is now an author and columnist for The Daily Mail.

When OK! Weekly won the bidding war to publish exclusive photos of Demi and Ashton's romantic, private Kabbalah ceremony in Beverly Hills, the team and I not only celebrated the great cover story and the increased magazine sales that would follow, but that -- for once -- a hot film star was not chasing a young cocktail waitress around Teddy's Nightclub at 3 a.m. Instead, he'd seen the value in an older woman. Sixteen years older. That is quite a chunk of change in normal years, but in Hollywood terms he was practically marrying his Granny ( a very beautiful Granny). We rejoiced.
Demi and Ashton's courtship came at a time when the "cougar" was discussed, celebrated and berated in the media on a daily basis. Successful, wealthy, independent women all over the world were realizing younger men could not only be more fun, grateful, and respectful than older men who may have a chip on their shoulder, but were probably better in bed too. The old statistical chestnut about a woman hitting her sexual peak in her 40s and a man hitting his in his early 20s was bandied around cocktail bars in Manhattan and honky tonk taverns in Nashville, and many women decided to test the theory for themselves. A man who wasn't threatened by your success and had a virility you had previously only dreamed of? Wow. "Where do we get one?"

The Kutchers' relationship not only added a celebrity sparkle to this previously unconventional type of partnership, but the fact Ashton wanted to commit to her  -- and her three daughters, and seemingly her ex-husband Bruce, too -- showed that these May-December relationships didn't have to be short-term flings based on sex. They could be serious too. Some women had known this for decades, of course, but there's nothing like an A-list endorsement to make the world wake up and shake off stereotypes.
And now, six years later, cougars across the globe are mourning. Rumored infidelities with numerous ladies -- younger than him and much younger than Demi --has earned Ashton our wrath. He's let Demi down. He's let us down.
Meanwhile Demi is really showing her age: She's been classy, strong and elegant throughout this whole public debacle.
