Giffords: 'I want to get back to work'

NEED TO KNOW
  • Rep. Gabrielle Giffords records message for supporters
  • Tells home state of Arizona 'I miss you'
  • Giffords and husband appeared on ABC News Monday

“I miss you. I miss Tucson. The mountains, blue skies. Even the heat.”

The speech is sweet and strong, but halting. The sentences are short but clear. And the voice is undeniably that of Gabrielle Giffords.

The Arizona congresswoman recorded a message for her Arizona constituents, telling them she is “getting stronger” and longs to return to work.

The minute-long message was posted on the congresswoman’s Facebook page, and has collected hundreds of comments supporting Giffords and calling her an “inspiration.”

It has been barely 10 months since Giffords was shot in the head in a massacre during a meet-and-greet at a Tucson supermarket that left six people dead including a 9-year-old girl, a district court judge and a member of Giffords' staff.

On Monday, Giffords and her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, appeared in an interview with ABC's Diane Sawyer. Giffords spoke mostly in single words, repeating them emphatically to get her point across. It was her first TV interview since the shooting.

“There is a lot to say,” Giffords says in her recorded message. “I will speak better. I want to get back to work. Representing Arizona is my honor.”
