It was quite possibly one of the worst days of Dr. Conrad’s Murray life, but for the funnymen of late-night TV, Murray’s involuntary manslaughter conviction provided ample punch lines.
In arguably the most ambitious gag of the evening, Jimmy Kimmel planted an attention-seeking loudmouth outside the courthouse while jurors were deliberating over the fate of Michael Jackson’s ex-doctor. Going by the name Jake Byrd and sporting a “Dr. Murder” t-shirt with Murray’s mug on it, the man shouted lines like “He’s bad! He’s bad! You know it!” Appearing to interrupt one interview, Byrd said, “Propofol is totally, totally fine when administered correctly.” Then he unpocketed a medicine-bottle prop and sprinkled drops on his tongue. When the verdict was finally announced he bellowed: "Lohan is out! Conrad is in! Hakuna Mutombo!"
Over on “The Tonight Show,” Jay Leno opted for relatively tamer one-liners about propofol -- it’s “five times more powerful than a Joe Biden speech” -- and joked that now that Murray’s been convicted, “I gotta get a new doctor.” In a nod to Lindsay Lohan he said, “They said [Murray’s] sentence will be delayed long enough to give him enough time to finish his Playboy shoot.”
Meanwhile, David Letterman reeled off some arguably edgier zingers on “The Late Show.” “They don’t think he [Murray] will do any jail time. He will go to work in the prison system, however. They think that he’ll be in charge of lethal injections,” Dave cracked. Then he added: “Michael Jackson’s personal physician found guilty. Michael Jackson’s plastic surgeon walks away free? How does that happen?”
Question is: Did any of the hosts’ wisecracks amuse you?
