A new study by psychologists at the University of California at San Diego claims that men are funnier than women. First off, who conducted this study, Professor Jerry Lewis?
I’ve been listening to this kind of nonsense ever since I got into comedy. “Women aren’t funny,” “men are naturally funnier,” and all kinds of other dumb statements made by...well...men, basically. Also, if you look at this study a bit closer, you’ll realize that the men who participated in the study gave higher points to their male counterparts. So the respondents who found men funnier than women were, that’s right! -- men. See a pattern here?
If you ask me, this entire study was flawed. They based it on people’s ability to write funny captions for the New Yorker cartoon contest. Please. Have you ever tried coming up with captions for that thing? It’s harder than balancing the federal budget or keeping Lindsay Lohan upright. Face it -- the idea of a woman being funnier is threatening to a man and it’s one of those uncomfortable things he’d rather not deal with, like taking out the garbage or practicing monogamy.
The fact is that women say hilarious and outrageous things that make us laugh all the time. If you don’t believe me, during the next GOP debate, try paying special attention to Michele Bachmann. I rest my case.
