What if there was a World Series and no one cared? Well, that may be overstating it a bit. The fight for baseball’s Holy Grail begins tonight when the St. Louis Cardinals and the Texas Rangers face off in Game One, but the matchup seems to be missing the fanfare of Series past.
These teams don’t have the tortured history of Chicago Cubs fans. And they aren’t from big media markets like the Red Sox or Yankees. But does that mean they deserve any less respect for making it to the top of the heap?
Some, like CBS Sports writer C. Trent Rosecrans, are preparing for a low-rated series. But others, like writer Matt Synder, say fans shouldn’t care about television ratings.
“I don't care what the TV ratings say or what all the baseball haters say. I don't care that most of the people in New York probably think this series sucks,” he writes. “Lots of people care about these two teams. The two are playing incredible baseball at this time and have huge fan bases behind them.”
And the competition between the Texas team and the midwestern one may provide one of the most memorable moments in World Series history. After all, the Rangers and the Cardinals already have slots on Sports Illustrated list of the best of all time.
How much do you care about the 2011 World Series? Will you be watching, or are have you already moved on to the 2012 season?
