Ladies, are you not getting what you want out of your career? Maybe it’s in your face.
A new study says painting on the makeup increases perceptions of competence and trustworthiness in women, which can lead to more success on the job. It’s long been a belief that the more beautiful the person, the better the benefits when it comes to navigating the workplace, but even if you’re not a "10," attention to your appearance seems like it could land you the same perks.
In the study, organized by Boston University professionals, people were asked to look at pictures of 25 women with various levels of makeup: bare-faced, natural, professional and glamorous. Whether using snap judgments or longer once-overs, people saw the faces with more makeup as more competent, friendly and trustworthy. Of course, it is interesting to note the study was funded by Proctor & Gamble, the people who bring you CoverGirl cosmetics.
This could be disheartening news to women who think makeup is a choice, not an expectation, but it may not be all about beauty. Experts say taking care of yourself simply shows you are willing to take care of other people -- no fake eyelashes required.
