Giuliana Rancic revealed on Monday that she is battling breast cancer.
The E! anchor broke the news on the "Today" show, saying she learned of her diagnosis while undergoing another round of in-vitro fertilization in an effort to get pregnant.
"Through my attempt to get pregnant through IVF, we sadly found out that I have early stages of breast cancer," she said. "It's been a shock.”
Giuliana and her husband Bill Rancic have chronicled her attempts to get pregnant on her reality show, "Giuliana & Bill." Two in-vitro fertilization treatments failed and on the season finale several weeks ago, they were shown trying one more time.
Unfortunately their last IVF attempt has been put on hold. Rancic told "Today's" Anne Curry, “A lot of people have been asking, 'We saw that you went and got IVF, are you pregnant?' But sadly, we've had to put that off," she said.
Rancic, 36, said it was during that third round of treatment that her doctor told her she needed to get a mammogram. After some hesitation Rancic agreed to get one.
"I wasn't prepared to get a mammogram until I was 40 years old, like I'd been told. I never in my wildest dreams expected anything to be wrong."
Since the cancer was caught early, her prognosis is good. She will undergo surgery this week and follow that with six weeks of radiation.
Through it all, Giuliana says the support from her husband has been “everything.”
"Bill is unbelievable. He lets me cry when I want to cry, he doesn't say, 'Hey, look at that person who's worse off than you are.' He just lets me feel what I'm feeling.”
Giuliana said her diagnosis will not keep her from trying for a baby in the future.
"I'm not gonna give up, I want that baby. And what's amazing is that baby will have saved my life…Now I truly believe that God was looking out for me. Had I gotten pregnant [earlier], a few years down the line I could be a lot sicker."
