'The Playboy Club' shuts its doors

NEED TO KNOW
  • NBC drops sexy '60s drama after only three episodes
  • Activists may have played into the show's downfall

We have the first causality of the fall 2011 TV season. To the disappointment of teenage boys everywhere, NBC has pulled the plug on “The Playboy Club.”

The demise of the sexy '60s drama comes as no surprise. “The Playboy Club” premiered September 20 to 5 million viewers. Since then ratings have dropped consistently with each episode.

The show was also plagued by controversy. The Parents Television Council called for companies not to sponsor the show in primetime. Joining the cause was feminist Gloria Steinman. She called for a boycott of the show. It’s pretty safe to say both parties are happy the show got the ax.

One person disappointed over the show’s cancellation is “Playboy” founder Hugh Hefner. Hef tweeted Tuesday night, “I'm sorry NBC's 'The Playboy Club' didn't find it's audience. It should have been on cable, aimed at a more adult audience.”

NBC has announced “The Playboy Club’s” replacement.  “Rock Center with Brian Williams” will be taking its place.

Will you miss “The Playboy Club” or are you excited to see “Rock Center with Brian Williams”?
