Hey, it’s Carlos Diaz with your day-before-Friday sports stories!
Soccer officials in Turkey have found a way to cut down on fan violence at matches: stop letting men into the stadiums… This week in Istanbul, 41-thousand women and children packed a stadium, waving team-colored flags and cheering wildly, without a single incident of the violence that has plagued so many Turkish soccer matches… The match had been scheduled to be played in an empty stadium as punishment for unruly fan behavior. Instead they let in only women and kids under 12… And now Turkish officials want to allocate more free tickets to ladies and children in future matches to continue to reduce fan violence.
The NFL has sent a strongly worded memo to all 32 teams telling them to stop faking injuries on the field… If you get caught faking an injury, the NFL warns that fines, suspensions and loss of draft picks will be the punishment… Two Giants players are accused of faking cramps in Monday night’s game against the Rams to slow down the St. Louis no-huddle offense.
The Washington Redskins are going to target Tony Romo’s broken rib in Monday Night’s big game. The Cowboys QB cracked a rib and punctured his lung in last Sunday’s win, but he still plans to play against the Redskins on Monday, so Washington defensive back DeAngelo Hall has put a bull’s-eye on Romo’s rib saying, “Romo’s ribs… I want to get a chance to put my helmet on whatever’s hurt.”
Now a legendary golfer is claiming that the Tiger Woods era is over… Greg Norman, who was the #1 golfer in the world in the 80’s and 90’s, says Tiger lacks the “street smarts” to recover his golf game… and his life! Norman says that Tiger now has too many distractions in his life to be dominant again… And says Woods’ body language on the course shows that he’s lost confidence. Norman adds he’d love to help Tiger get his groove back, by having a guy-to-guy talk.
Before the biggest start of his life, Red Sox pitcher Erik Bedard was served legal papers asking for more child support by a guy wearing a Yankees jersey earlier this week… Lifelong Yankees fan Tom Cabral told the New York Post, "When I walked in I was like, 'I'm a Yankees fan, but I'm not trying to (give you a hard time)…' But he said it was no problem." But it was a problem, because Bedard then went out and pitched terribly, getting knocked out of the game in the 3rd inning in the Red Sox Tuesday loss to the Orioles…
The supposed new Miami Marlins logo is getting killed by fans down in South Florida… The logo, featuring a bunch of new colors and a streamlined fish, was leaked to the internet yesterday, and Marlins fans went nuts, posting reviews like, “Ugly,” “Hideous” and “The colors look like they faded in the washer”… The Marlins are moving into a new baseball park next season, and they will officially unveil their new logo in November… Some fans think the team leaked the new logo on purpose to gauge opinion.
