Twenty-one days straight of 100F or more in Tyler, TX. Make it 22 for today, unfortunately. The screaming hot readings will mix with the high humidity to make it feel like 110-115 from the Mid MS Valley to the Upper MW today, with warnings for more regions starting this afternoon. Check out the map, with more than 25% of the CONUS under an excessive heat warning, advisory, or watch. The sprawling high-pressure center is drifting to the East a touch now, and the Western flank is being whittled down by some storms, but the heart of the heat is still intact. I’ll have the forecasted highs on the show.
NWS Heat Map
There are storms riding along the top and East side of the ridge, so watch out upper MW, OH Valley, and Mid Atlantic. The radar will be active most of the day there. Monsoon rain will impact the Four Corners again, as well as some lighter stuff in the Pacific NW.
We have some great video of the haboob that affected the Phoenix region yesterday to show you, too. I know, I know. Some of the terms we use to describe these things are a little suspect. When I was in college earning my meteorology degree, we used to marvel at the terms ‘haboob’, ‘mammatus clouds’, and ‘warm moist tongue’. All actual meteorological terms!
Anyway, tropical storm Bret is down to 50 mph winds, and is headed away from the US mainland. The patch should split the uprights between Hatteras and Bermuda, with no warnings posted at this time. I’m not too worried about Bret. Gotta go, see you out there.
